Sickness at work

Even the survivors of corporate downsizing are paying a price, with their
health.

A new study finds that the employees left behind are more likely to get sick,
for longer periods of time. Sick leaves of more than three days increased 31-percent during the four year study. Researchers looked at companies that trimmed the workforce by more than 13-percent.

Burn Victims

Tonight, doctors in Boston are announcing a formula that can predict whether a
burn victim will survive. The three critical factors include: burns covering
more than 40-percent of the body, being over age 60, and having lung damage
from smoke and heat. With all three conditions, the risk of death is 90-percent.

Cancer causing fires

And a warning is going out tonight that could make you hold your breath before
lighting a nice, cozy fire in the fireplace. An EPA study on animals found
long-term exposure to wood smoke is twelve-times more likely to cause cancer
than an equal amount of cigarette smoke.

Scientists say you can lower your risk by making sure the chimney is clean, and
cracking a window or door for improved ventilation.
