Sex of a Child

If you have a little boy and would like a little girl next time, technology can help make it happen.

For some people, waiting until delivery is the best way to find out if your newborn is a boy or a girl. But others don't want to leave it to chance. Medical technology can pre-determine the gender of a child before conception.

Arie Birkenteid, M.D. - "All we do is we take the sperm, prior to insemination and we seict, or we increase the probability of having the egg fertilized by either an X or a Y."

The X or Y determines the sex of a child. Doctor Arie Birkenteid of the Diamond Institute for Infertility and Menopause, says to determine a specific sex, all you have to do is use the chosen chromosome for fertilization. To do that, technicians put the semen in a centrifuge.

Dr. Birkenteid - "The procedure is based on differences of the specific weight, or specific gravity of the sperm cells. The X-bearing sperm cells are somewhat heavier than the Y sperm bearing cells."

So if you wanted a girl, you would fertilize the egg with a sperm from the bottom of the vial using the x chromosome. This increases your preferred outcome from a fifty-fifty to a 20 to 80 percent chance of having the child be the gender you prefer. The procedure sparks a lot of debate.

Woman- "I do not agree with that technology. My opinion is that it's controversial. I do not have a desire to have a child of one sex the other."

But Doctor Birkenfeld say about two to five percent of couples do have a desire to determine the sex of their baby. And this technology helps them to do that.
