Previous Story Seldane Recall For the past three years, a runny nose and watery eyes have been a way of life for 31-year-old Mike Carrel. Mike is allergic to practically everything in the air. Mike Carrel-Has allergies-"When I wake up in the morning my eyes are sealed shut." Mike and millions of other allergy patients used Seldane or Seldane-D to relieve their symptoms, but now they'll have to find a new remedy to stifle their sniffles. Yesterday the Food and Drug Administration announced that the two popular allergy drugs would be removed from pharmacy shelves by February first. Researchers say the drugs can cause problems for people with liver disease. More seriously, if Seldane or Seldane-D is taken in combination with some antibiotics or antifungal medications, the results could be fatal. But doctors will be able to prescribe a new drug, Allegra-D, as soon as next month which will replace both discontinued medications. Allegra-D will be similar to the Allegra now available only with a decongestant. Dr. William Paris-Oakwood/"I think the combination of allegra and decongestant will be as successful as Seldane, absolutely." That's good news for mike and other allergy patients who were stunned to learn the drug that helped them breathe was capable of harm.
